The Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement

Scarlett, 47 - Atlanta, USA

My name is Scarlett Lewis, and I’m the founder of the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement. I founded this organisation, following the murder of my six-year-old son, Jesse McCord Lewis on December 14th, 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary when an angry former student shot his way through the glass doors and proceeded to gun down 20 first-graders in two first grade classrooms and six educators in one of the worst mass shootings in US history. Shortly after the tragedy, I came home, and I found a message that Jesse had left for us on the kitchen chalkboard. He had written three words: nurturing, healing, love. Those three words are in the vernacular of a six-year-old. They’re not something a six-year-old would normally say. They were phonetically spelled because he was in first grade and just learning how to write, but I knew that he had a spiritual awareness that he wasn’t going to be on earth for very much longer. That was meant as a message of comfort for his family and friends, but also inspiration for the world.

I knew that if Adam Lanza who was the shooter in our tragedy had been able to give and receive nurturing, healing, love, that the tragedy would never have happened. Really, it was in this way that I began to feel compassion for him. This started my process of forgiveness. I wanted to be part of the solution to the issues that we’re seeing in this world. Really, a lot of what we’re seeing is from lack of love. We’re all connected by the want and need to love and be loved. I created a free programme called the Choose love Enrichment Programme, pre-K through 12th grade that actually teaches kids and their educators how to choose love for themselves and others because we can’t always choose what happens to us, but we can always choose how we respond. We can always respond in love.
